It may be a new name on the scene, yet the producer duo that constitutes Author are certainly no newbies in their own right. Both Ruckspin and Jack Sparrow have established themselves as highly gifted and hard-working producers, dedicated to engineering optimum quality sounds. Following their first collaboration, 'Dread', which was included on 'Get Darker Presents This is Dubstep 2011', they formed Author as a shared project.
Jack Sparrow and Ruckspin have taken a step back from their natural home of dance floor dub to create together a more meaningful ambient sound that is not necessarily made for the club scene. That is not to say that some tracks wouldn't get a club going. On first listen you can see the depth of detail the two have undertaken to create the ambient techy vibe with every sound feeling like it was chosen with purpose. I see this album as a experimental push into new areas for the Leeds based duo, and with the natural home for both being the dance floor, this is certainly a step away from their usual boundaries, although my favourite track Fix has an element of the dub-dance producers natural roots shining through. I see this album as an experiment (or that's how it appears) because of the way some songs don't seem to flow naturally, there are definitely foundations for some fantastic soft dub hits in the album but certain tracks lack the build up or the story aspect needed to create when piecing together 'soft-dub'. What I mean by that is with each sound feeling like it's building a narrative without the need for words. The duo have certainly used this project to explore a darker electro dubstep sound, shown through the track Revolutions. Author have already stated this is more of a live project and those of us that get to experience the duo live will certainly be in for a major high-tech show. Author will be released on the 14th of November by Tectonic, a Bristol based label promoting the Leeds sound.
